The Mountain Bike Unit was formed in the early 2000s. Officers typically patrol the Warwood, East Wheeling, Wheeling Island, and Business District areas by bicycle. In this capacity, officers respond to calls for service, take reports, and handle traffic-related incidents. Additionally, the officer assigned to the Mountain Bike Unit serves as a department liaison by attending various community events and conducting child safety talks.
The department currently has several certified officers who regularly patrol on bicycles. Several bikes are positioned throughout the city at satellite offices and can be deployed by bicycle-certified officers during the course of their normal duties. Additionally, the bicycles are utilized for special events, road races, and directed patrols in areas with high crime or drug activity.
