The Citizen Police Academy is a 13-week program intended to foster relationships with the citizens of Wheeling in order to provide them with a working knowledge of the policies and limitations of the Wheeling Police Department. This popular program helps increase the trust and confidence of our citizens in our ability to provide effective public safety, and creates better understanding between residents and the Wheeling Police Department through education.
During the course, participants will have a front row seat and hands-on interactions on various policing topics. Speakers include local professionals in the criminal justice field including police officers on the local and federal levels, prosecutors, attorneys, and victims’ advocates. Additionally, participants will take field trips to the Northern Regional Jail, the City-County Building, take part in a police ride along and try out many new features at the department’s new headquarters, including a firearms simulator.
Depending on the interest and number of participants, the Wheeling Police Department will hold a spring and/or fall class.
After graduating from the Citizen Police Academy, participants can join the CPA-AA (Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association). The CPA-AA is a non-profit group that supports the efforts of the Wheeling Police Department and the Citizens Police Academy.
