Be A Good Neighbor

The City of Wheeling's Building and Planning Department receives hundreds of complaints throughout the year regarding residential, commercial and industrial properties. These complaints can often be easily resolved without the need for citations and court appearances. 

The most frequent violations involve high grass and weeds, the parking of motor vehicles on the grass, the storage of junk and debris in an exposed manner and the lack of basic maintenance on dwellings, garages, sheds and fences.  Improper storage of inoperable vehicles can be a serious problem for a community.  The vehicles are unsightly, clutter the neighborhood, provide harborage for rodents and are an attractive nuisance for children.  They have a blighting influence on a neighborhood.

What can you do to be a good neighbor? Help maintain the integrity of your neighborhood by keeping the following in mind:

• Mow your grass on a weekly basis.
• Respect your neighbors by not placing your trash, garbage and other debris at the curb sooner than 24 hours before pick-up and placed in a standard container.
• Do not park on your front or side lawn.  Park your vehicles (cars, boats, and trailers) on hard-surface paving that consists of approved concrete or asphalt driveways.
• Do not park wrecked, dismantled and/or unlicensed vehicles on your property unless stored within a garage.
• Maintain the exterior walls, windows, doors, roofs, gutters and downspouts of your home, garages and sheds.
• Keep your exterior property clean of junk and debris.
• Submit a 311 ticket to notify the department of a possible violation.
