E-Bike, Bicycle & Scooter Safety Reminders

Are you riding a bicycle, e-bike, or scooter around town? Here are a few important safety reminders for riders and drivers:

Bicycles and e-bikes must follow the same traffic laws as vehicles.

Ride with traffic and stay as far to the right as safely possible.

Drivers must give bicyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.

At night, bikes must have a white front light and rear reflector/light.

Keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.

Never hold onto moving vehicles while riding.

Ride responsibly and avoid reckless or unsafe behavior.

If under the age of 15, you are permitted to ride on the sidewalk; otherwise, follow the rules of the road.

E-Bike Basics:

Riders under 15 on both bicycles and e-bikes MUST wear a properly fitted helmet.

Class 1 & 2 e-bikes are allowed anywhere traditional bicycles are permitted.

Class 3 e-bikes (anything motorized that can accelerate up to 28 MPH) have additional restrictions and are not permitted on any sidewalk or on the trail system. You must be on the road and follow all traffic laws (including traffic lights).

Operating an e-bike under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited.

Scooter Reminder:

You must be 18 years old to ride a motorized scooter. Stay off the sidewalks; use the roadway, bike lane, or trail. Motorized scooters are only permitted in designated zones of the city. To learn more, visit: https://www.wheelingwv.gov/MotorizedScooter
