The Rules of the Road
Many children know how to ride a bike, but do they know the rules of the road? When riding on City streets, parents should be sure kids understand the following:
- Ride with traffic, not against it.
- Stop at stop signs and traffic signals.
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
- Ride as far to the right as practical.
- Use lights after dark.
- Signal turns.
-One rider per seat unless the bike is designed for more.
- Look both ways before crossing a street. Never dart into traffic.
- Helmets save lives.
Heritage Trail Rules
- Share the trail.
- Ride at a safe speed.
- Keep to the right except when passing.
- Pass on the left.
- Announce yourself i.e. "On your left!"
- Yield to pedestrians.
- Slow down near children and pets.
- Don't block the trail.
- Keep one ear free.
- Phones down!
- Ride single file.
- No unauthorized motor vehicles are permitted on the trail.
Important Information About E-Bikes
-There are three classes of E-Bikes.
-Class 1 and Class 2 can go up to 20 mph.
-They are allowed anywhere traditional bicycles are permitted.
-Class 3 E-bikes can accelerate up to 28 mph.
-Class 3 E-Bikes must be equipped with a speedometer that displays speed in MPH.
-Class 3 e-bikes must be on the road and follow all traffic laws, including traffic lights.
-A person under 15 years of age on an E-Bike is required to wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle
helmet.
-Operating an E-Bike under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited.
Let's Not Forget About Motorized Scooters
General Reminders:
-Riders must be 18 or older
-Ride solo, only one rider per scooter
-Stay off the sidewalks, use the roadway, bike lane or trail
-Park responsibly at your nearest bike rack, corner of the sidewalk, or area out of the way from pedestrian traffic
-Helmets are recommended, but not required
-Motorized scooters are only permitted in designated zones of the City.

Where are people supposed to ride scooters?
Scooters can used on the street, in a bike lane or on the Heritage trail. Following all traffic rules. Do not ride on the sidewalk, or interstate highway.
Where can scooters be parked?
Users should park the scooter anywhere on the sidewalk in the "furniture zone," as long as they don't block access for others. The furniture zone is the area between the curb and the walkway where there may already be trash receptacles, bus stops, benches, and bike racks. Parked devices should not block:
-the pedestrian walkway (leave at least 6' of space)
-bus stops and shelters
-doorways and emergency exits
-fire hydrants and standpipes
-driveways and sidewalk ramps
How should I drive my car when there are people on scooter on the road with me?
Share the road. People riding scooters are allowed on the road. While they will likely use bike lanes when available, scooter riders can be in the middle of the travel lane to be visible and to avoid road hazards. Slow down and drive with caution.
Drivers may pass people on scooters if they leave at least three feet between the motor vehicle and the rider. This is state law. Where possible, change lanes to pass. You may cross a double yellow line to pass as long as you safely yield to oncoming traffic. Make sure you are safely ahead of the rider before merging back into the right lane. If there is not room to pass safely, follow behind at a safe distance until you can pass.

Any person who is 18 years old or older.
