Terry Walls Sworn In as Wheeling Deputy Police Chief

Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger announced today that Terry Walls has been appointed operations bureau commander and deputy chief of police at the rank of Major. Walls began his new role on Monday and will oversee the patrol and training divisions, as well as their specialized units within the police department.

“Terry Walls brings exceptional experience, professionalism, and leadership that will strongly support the mission and core values of the Wheeling Police Department. Having previously worked with Terry years ago, I know his integrity, dedication, and skill set make him an outstanding fit to help guide the department and enhance our service to the community. I am confident his contributions will further strengthen the WPD and elevate our overall performance,” said Chief Schwertfeger.

“I am truly excited to serve as the Deputy Chief of Police for the Wheeling Police Department, right here in my home state of West Virginia,” Walls said. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow officers and the community as we strive towards our shared goals.”

Walls brings 28 years of law enforcement experience to the Wheeling Police Department. He most recently served with the Albemarle County Police Department in Virginia, where he retired in December 2024 at the rank of lieutenant colonel.

During his tenure, he oversaw agency operations and management, led community engagement, and collaborated with various organizations on public safety initiatives, among other leadership responsibilities.

A native of Mercer County, West Virginia, Walls is a 1995 graduate of Bluefield State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology.

Walls joins Deputy Chief Josh Sanders, who continues to serve as Investigations Bureau Commander.
