The City of Wheeling celebrated the grand opening of the Pat Carroll Pickleball Courts with a ribbon cutting ceremony held Thursday at the Patterson Sports Complex in Elm Grove.
Mayor Denny Magruder, members of City Council, City Administration and representatives from the Parks and Recreation Department attended the event, along with community members and pickleball players who gathered to celebrate the occasion.
In September 2024, Wheeling City Council approved funding for the construction of eight pickleball courts at the complex, enhancing the City’s recreational offerings. Earlier this year, Council unanimously approved a resolution to rename the courts in honor of Pat Carroll, a local pickleball enthusiast who was instrumental in introducing and growing the sport in the Friendly City.
Magruder said pickleball has quickly become one of Wheeling’s most popular recreational activities.
“These new courts provide a dedicated space for players of all ages and skill levels, while honoring Pat Carroll’s passion and leadership in helping the sport take root and thrive in our community,” he said.
City Manager Robert Herron said the opening of the Pat Carroll Pickleball Courts is a wonderful addition to the Patterson Sports Complex and to the Elm Grove community.
“This project reflects the City’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities for residents of all ages, and it’s especially meaningful to honor Pat Carroll, whose passion and dedication starting 20 years ago helped grow the sport right here in Wheeling.”
The Pat Carroll Pickleball Courts are now open for public play at the Patterson Sports Complex, 50 Patterson Avenue in Elm Grove.
