The Wheeling Police Department will honor and remember local, regional, and national law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice during its 12th annual Law Enforcement Memorial, set for Monday, May 12, 2025.
The event is set for 6 p.m. at Wheeling’s Heritage Port. In the event of rain or high water, the memorial will be held inside WesBanco Arena.
This year’s keynote speaker is Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney Shawn R. Turak. Turak was sworn in on Jan. 1, 2025, and has worked in the prosecutor’s office since 2002.
The memorial will also feature ceremonial music by local musician Gage Joseph, a formal wreath presentation, the playing of “Taps,” and a 21-gun salute by the Wheeling Police Department Honor Guard.
The event coincides with “National Police Week,” observed annually in mid-May. National Peace Officers Memorial Day is held on May 15 and honors law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
Since the department’s founding more than 219 years ago, nine Wheeling police officers have died in the line of duty. Nationwide, in 2024, 165 officers were killed in the line of duty.
