The objective of the Historic Landmarks Commission is to oversee the preservation and protection of historically and architecturally significant buildings and neighborhoods in the City of Wheeling, West Virginia. The Commission is recognized as a Certified Local Government by the National Parks Service and State Historic Preservation Office due to its demonstrated commitment to historic preservation.
The City of Wheeling is richly endowed with numerous historic buildings, structures, sites and districts which represent the historical, architectural and cultural heritage of the City. This heritage can best be identified, studied, preserved and protected for the general welfare of residents of this City under the authority of the Historic Landmarks Commission. The preservation and protection of these historic amenities aids economic development, improves property values, enhances the City's historic attractions to tourists and visitors and aids the development of education of this City by the preservation of such heritage for future generations. The preservation of this heritage is essential to the promotion of the prosperity, education and general welfare of the residents and the City. It is the public policy and the public interest of the City to engage in a comprehensive program of historic preservation, along with the private sector, to promote the use and preservation of its heritage for the education and general welfare of the people of the City.
The Commission consists of seven members, six of whom are appointed by the City Manager and the seventh is a member of Council who is appointed by Council. All members of the Commission are residents of the City and serve without compensation. The members have demonstrated special interest, experience or education in history, architecture, planning real estate or law.
The Commission meets the first Thursday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
