Interstate 70 throughout the City of Wheeling will undergo a $214-million bridge rehabilitation project on 26 bridges from the Ohio State line to Milepost 7 (Middle Creek Road area) until October 2022. The project is needed to provide structurally safe bridges and connections that accommodate current local and interstate travel needs. The project is broken down into three areas: Section A (Ohio State Line to West Side of Tunnel); Section B (East Side of Tunnel to Elm Grove); and Section C (I-470 interchange to Mile Post 7/Middle Creek Road).
PROJECT MAP & INFO:
DETOUR INFO: The primary detour for all traffic traveling through the city will be Interstate 470. Detour for local traffic through the Fulton area to downtown will be US-40 /National Road.
Wheeling Suspension Bridge: The historic 170-year-old Wheeling Suspension Bridge was CLOSED indefinitely by the West Virginia Department of Transportation in September 2019. Until further notice, no vehicular traffic will be permitted on the bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists are permitted to use the bridge.
Will I-70 be closed?
There are planned closures to allow for construction of the Fulton Bridges (These bridge span over Big Wheeling Creek near Tunnel Green).
Eastbound: I-70 East at Fulton Bridge will be closed on Feb. 1, 2021 to Nov. 1, 2021.
Westbound: I-70 West at Fulton Bridge was completed and reopened in the fall of 2020. No additional closures are scheduled westbound.
Heritage Trail Closure
Beginning Monday, February 1, 2021 a section of the Wheeling Heritage Trail, from Rock Point Road to the Tunnel Green area will be closed to all pedestrians and bicyclists for approximately nine months. The closure is necessary for the Interstate 70 bridges project and the demolition/construction of the eastbound Fulton Bridge span. Signs are posted in the closure area.
