WFD Promotes Fire Safety

Wheeling, WV – Each October, the Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and fire departments across North America observe Fire Prevention Week to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and to promote public awareness of fire safety. The Wheeling Fire Department is no exception.
This year, the Fire Prevention Week theme is Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned. The Wheeling Fire Department, led by Dave Palmer, visited 6 schools during this week and took 695 K-2 students through the Fire Safety House. Students were taught a fire drill in the smokehouse and asked to practice a fire drill at home. They will visit other schools in the spring.
Each grade level was given a coloring/workbook to review fire safe practices at school and home. These books were paid for by donations of local businesses.
Fire safety tips for the home include having smoke alarms installed on every floor of your home, insuring the working order of smoke alarms, and replacing any smoke alarms that are older than 10 years.
Many more tips are provided in the NFPA brochures. Brochures can be obtained at any of the above locations during the designated times, at the City-County Building, or by calling the Wheeling Fire Department Headquarters at 304-234-3726.
