The Arts & Cultural Commission meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month in the Board Room in Suite 302 in the City-County Building at 1500 Chapline Street, Wheeling, WV 26003. The meetings are open to the public.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Wheeling Arts & Cultural Commission is to promote and develop artistic and cultural activities and initiatives that stimulate economic development and advance the quality of life and vibrancy of the greater Wheeling area.
Goals and Objectives
- To foster the artistic, cultural and creative strengths of Wheeling in order to create sustainable and positive aesthetic results in our community.
- To communicate the economic benefits, value, and importance that arts and culture have on the community and overall vitality of the City of Wheeling.
- To heighten the awareness of our diverse artistic and cultural activities and encourage active participation in and support of these programs, events and services.
- To expand the reach and effectiveness of programs and services beyond our surrounding region in order to enhance the perception of our city and promote tourism.
- To advocate for policy change and/or implementation that promotes the integration of arts and culture into community life.
- To identify funding sources to promote art and cultural activities in the city of Wheeling and to advise the City with respect to those opportunities.
- To respond proactively to the needs of local artists and art organizations by serving as a liaison among groups and individuals engaged in art and cultural activities.
- To encourage the role of arts in education and promote cultural enrichment to young people by working in concert with schools, businesses and other organizations.
Art is interpretative, subjective, objective, and communicative. Artists engage us by expressing the human condition through paint, film, music, movement and the written word. This commission will advance and cultivate these ideas through the following committees:
